LDS Genealogy E-mail
Lists
Using the following subscription information for these e-mail lists will
subscribe you to the digest version. The digest version compiles all of a
day's postings to that list into a single e-mail message, so you receive a single message
per day from the list rather than ten or twenty. If you prefer the mode where you
receive many separate e-mails from list members per day, you can switch over once you have
subscribed in digest form. When you subscribe, the listowner will send you a
confirmation e-mail which includes instructions for switching modes.
I omit non-digest-mode subscription instructions for each list because I
designed these instructions to be used as a handout, so I try to limit them to two pages
in WordPerfect.
Church Callings
- FHCNET: This wonderful list is a treasure trove of ideas on how to run a
Family History Center. It treats topics such as:
- Writing successful budget proposals
- Helping patrons
- Planning successful family history conferences
- Using different kinds of software to organize and catalog a FHC's
collection
- Involving the FHC with local genealogical societies
- Qualifying a FHC for microfilm reader/printers and digital copiers
- Obtaining computer donations without soliciting, etc.
The mail list also has a dedicated Website called the Director's Nest at
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~fhcnet/.
To subscribe to FHCNET-D, send a message to FHCNET-D-request@rootsweb.com that contains
in the body of the message the command subscribe and no other text. No subject line
is necessary.
- GHFHC-NEWS: "A mailing list for dissemination of the newsletter for
the Geneva Heights Family History Center, Orem, Utah. This is a read-only list and
postings will not be accepted." This list, then, is an example of an online
newsletter produced by a Family History Center.
To subscribe send the word
"subscribe" (without the quotes) as the only text in the body of a message to
ghfhc-news-l-request@rootsweb.com (mail mode) or ghfhc-news-d-request@rootsweb.com (digest
mode).
- LDSFHCConsultants: "Solely for LDS Family History Center consultants
to exchange information and ideas, discuss programs and workshops, ask questions,
etc."
[Note from Michael: Church manuals list no
calling termed "Family History Center Consultant." Family History Centers
have Directors, Staff, and sometimes Specialists in the research of certain ethnicities,
localities, or record types. In church manuals, the term "consultant" is
reserved for Ward Family History Consultants and Stake Family History Consultants, whose
calling it is to train the members in family history and temple work. The title of
this e-mail list makes its readership and subject matter ambiguous. A change in the
title would clarify whether this e-mail list is for ward and stake consultants or for FHC
staff, whose expertise, subjects of interest, and genealogical and administrative
responsibilities are almost entirely different.]
To subscribe to LDSFHCConsultants, send a message to
ldsfhcconsultants-subscribe@egroups.com that contains in the body of the message the
command subscribe and no other text. No subject line is necessary.

subject, too.
LDS Genealogy Research

"worthy of all acceptation."
