Using the Rookie's
Guide to Genealogy Research
Purpose & Audience
While serving as director of the Provo Utah South Family History Center of the Church
of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), I realized that staff members there needed
some basic genealogy training. As a genealogy major at Brigham Young University at
the time, I had access to plenty of resources from which to glean the lesson materials, so
I began writing. Realizing that many Family History Center directors lacked the
training needed to train their staff, I decided the Rookie's Guide should be
posted on the Internet to share it with a wider audience. Although the initial
lessons were designed to train Family History Center staff members, they have served
hundreds of other genealogists since the Guide's creation, including LDS ward
family history consultants, Family History Center patrons, and many who have never
researched at the Family History Library or at the 3,000 Family History Centers which
serve as its branch libraries.
When will the Rookie's Guide be
Finished?
Creating these lessons while raising a family, finishing college, working two jobs, and
serving genealogy callings is a much-interrupted process. I write them when I can,
and post them as soon as they're written. The lessons
initially appear on this site in outline form. Each time I teach a lesson in person,
I revise it and re-post it. After several revisions, the lessons will be placed in
narrative format.
Printing Permission & Instructions
Please feel free to print out the Rookie's Guide for use at home or at a
Family History Center. It was made to be shared. Only two restrictions apply
to the printing and copying of the Rookie's Guide. First, don't sell it or
incorporate it into a commercial publication. Second, please include the URL
(internet address) on any printouts or copies. This way, others will be able to find
the Rookie's Guide as it is updated.
To print a lesson:
- Use your Web browser to navigate to the page you want to print.
- On your browser's menu bar, click "File," then "Print."
When I finally graduate from Starving Student status, I will purchase Adobe Acrobat,
which will be used to convert the Guide's lessons to the Adobe .pdf file format.
Readers will then be able to download the Guide's .pdf files and view and print them using
the free Acrobat Reader. The resulting print jobs will be nicely formatted, with
column layout, table of contents, and index, appearing just as they would in a book
generated by WordPerfect. The free Acrobat Reader is available at http://www.adobe.com.
